and you will read a long post –
Have you ever watched The Shawshank Redemption (1994)? A movie that is still sitting down in the 1st rank on IMBD (Click me if you’re being curiouser).
Well, I didn’t watch this movie as soon as it came out, since I was only around 1 year old back then. I don’t even remember when the first time I watched this movie. The truth is, this movie stole my heart as well the rest of the people in this world, it’s becoming “the-movie-that-i-want-to-watch-all-over-again”.
Andy Dufrense, the main character played by Tim Robbins, is a formerly successful banker but have to live his life in jail for around 19 years. Then, there is this character played by Morgan Freeman named Red – who will lead you by his narrative during this movie. Story about how he became Andy’s best friend will raise the hype of this movie.
As mentioned the clue on title and I believe you already saw the banner above, for now, I will also do review about a Korean Drama named : Innocent Defendant (2017).
This Korean Drama started to air in January 23rd 2017 on SBS. Starred Ji Sung as Park Jung-woo, Uhm Ki-joon as Cha Min-ho/ Cha Sun-ho, and Girl’s Generation member, Kwon Yu-ri (you can visit myasiantv or dramafire to watch it online or to get some info about this series).
Let’s begin my review (well, I’m trying to be very objective).
I do admit it is a bit hyperbole if I said Innocent Defendant is the Korean version of Shawshank Redemption. Meanwhile, both of these creations were created a different perspective of a life value behind the prison.

The plot of the story began when there are men who are accused for murdering their wives (- also a daughter for Innocent Defendant), but no one knows that those men are actually innocents. They remain in silent, and then they come up with an idea of starting their new/full of torture life together as a friend.
There are two best parts of both. First, the stories of other prisoners, on how the ended up in jail. In Shawshank Redemption, of course, they committed the crimes. They’ve spent almost entire life in prison until they’re losing for hope. In the end, they are feeling frustrated when they have a chance to breathe as a free man again.
On the other hand, in Innocent Defendant version, not all of the prisoners committed to a crime. There is an old man who committed to a crime that he never did, since took a place over a woman’s crime. There is also a guy who accused by the same person who is also trap the main character, Jung-woo. Well, drama will always be drama, right?
My second favorite part is when those men were trying to escape from the prison. Andy Dufrense made a tunnel from his room that is connected to a sinkhole, which I can’t imagine how smelly that would be just to escape from the prison. Thanks to his geology skill, he managed to be free. A little different from Andy, Jung-woo managed to escape from the prison along with his friends. It all because of a perfect time accuracy and a kind-hearted brother in law of Jung-woo who shown up in right time.
What about the ending? Both of these creations have happy ending in different way. Andy Dufrense makes a good life in an Island as a free man, even though he need to use a different identity that he made in prison. And, Jung-woo can happily ever after with his daughter after he ‘cleared’ his name.
My conclusion would be, both of these stories told us that “Prison are not always filled by bad people” as well as “Do not ever play with smart-innocent people or they will come to get their revenge“. That’s why I think that smart people are always heartgasm.
